Did Winston Churchill lead the world’s first UFO coverup? RICK HALE looks at this intriguing WW2 conspiracy theory…
Over the last few months there have been several news articles about Navy and Air Force pilots encountering flying craft that could not possibly be of this world.
The official position of the Ministry of Defense is, whatever these pilots are experiencing are either misidentification of conventional aircraft or a trick of light and shadow.
To the highly trained and disciplined mind of a fighter jet pilot, both explanations are patently absurd. Not to mention insulting to their intelligence.
These sightings that are now being brought out into the open by the men and women of the armed forces is nothing new.
Since the birth of military aviation, there have been numerous reports of pilots witnessing strange craft that could not possibly be conventional aircraft.
Unfortunately, whenever pilots were brave enough to come forward, their sightings were either completely dismissed, covered up Or, they were threatened that if they reported their encounter their career would come to an end.
Conspiracy theorists believe the government keeps these sightings hush hush because the general public might be thrown into a panic.
Some believe this cover-up can be traced back to war ravaged England when the Bulldog, Winston Churchill himself was the first world leader to cover-up these sightings.
We may have never known about this cover-up if it wasn’t for one simple letter.
One Simple Letter
The origins of this extraordinary story began about two decades ago.
During the closing year of the 20th century in 1999, the Ministry of Defense, along with the National Archives declassified over 5000 pages of information regarding the existence of UFOs.
For the most part, the files dealt with eyewitness testimony, fake photographs of purportedly otherworldly space craft and alien abductions. Generally, things that are easily dismissed.
Except for one letter that suggested the government of the United Kingdom and the American government may have worked together to cover-up a mass sighting by a bomber crew during World War II.
If there was any truth to this letter, it would mean the two superpowers may know a lot more than they’re willing to admit.
The UFO Coverup
According to the heavily redacted letter a man wrote to the Ministry of Defence to report that in the waning days of World War II, his grandfather sat in on a meeting with Winston Churchill and American General Dwight D. Eisenhower.
The topic, the existence of flying saucers being witnessed by fighter pilots.
The story goes, the crew of a bomber and their escort was returning from a bombing run in Germany when a shiny metallic ball of light raced out of the sky and followed alongside the bomber.
The crew reported the “foo fighter” as they called it kept pace just long enough for the crew to take pictures and make a detailed observation of the airborne oddity.
The crew watched as the ball turned away and raced off into the distance until it disappeared over the horizon.
Upon hearing this story in the meeting, Churchill sat back in his chair to ponder the story he had just heard.
Undoubtedly, he was carefully weighing the options of what their next move should be.
During those tense moments silence filled the room. An almost tangible silence.
Churchill then stood up from his chair and explained that the people of Great Britain must never learn of this sighting.
Churchill believed that if this story of alien visitation could cause a panic and make people lose faith in religious institutions.
The prime minister seemed pleased with his decision and hoped this would be the last time he would ever hear of such a thing. Unfortunately, he was terribly wrong.
DC Mass Sighting
In July 1952, while in Washington DC, Churchill was shocked to hear that American fighter jets had been scrambled to intercept several unidentified flying objects spotted by radar over the American capital.
When Churchill returned to England, he sent a memo to his Secretary of State for Air, Lord Cherwell.
The memo known as “the Churchill Memorandum” tasked Lord Cherwell with investigating reports of sightings of UFOs and alien visitation.
Lord Cherwell formed a group consisting of military men and scientists called the Flying Saucer Working Party.
Their mandate was to investigate UFOs and keep whatever they find from the public. Churchill remained steadfast in his belief if the public discovered the truth it would mean the end of Christianity.
According to the Ministry of Defense, all UFO files prior to 1967 were destroyed.
No record of the meeting that sparked Churchill’s interest in UFOs existed nor is there any evidence of a cover-up.
And the MoD denies a group like the Flying Saucer Working Party ever existed.
Officially UFOs do not exist.
Nevertheless, conspiracy theorists believe the Working Party still exists and works alongside its American counterpart to cover-up the truth.
I’m not a conspiracy theorist by any means. With that being said, it doesn’t really seem to unreasonable that world powers may know more than they’re letting on.
I suppose we may never know until London looks to its skies and sees a fleet of UFOs hanging overhead. Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that.
