The rare beauty of a Blood Worm Moon is a celestial event where the Worm Moon aligns with a total lunar eclipse, casting a stunning copper-red glow, writes RACHAEL ELIZABETH

During the early hours of Friday, 14 March, a breathtaking celestial event is due to take place. The third full moon of 2025 is known as a “Worm Moon”, but it is also a full lunar eclipse; these two events will present us with a precious spectacle, a Blood Worm Moon.
Every full moon has a nickname which usually references certain key moments in nature, around the time of the full moon; for example, July’s “Buck Moon” is called a Buck Moon as this is around the same time that male deers, aka Bucks, begin to regrow their antlers; the ‘Worm Moon’ nickname is considered to be the result of March signalling the beginning of spring and the warming of the weather – this warming is said to thaw the cold soil, which sees the emergence of earthworms.
The appearance of the humble worm provides sustenance for hatching baby birds, thus signifying the arrival of Spring and the upcoming summer months; though not all full moon nicknames tend to reflect the change in appearance of the moon, the celestial spectacle awaiting us is a special one, as the Blood Worm Moon does glow in a mesmerising copper red hue.
A Blood Moon is a term used to describe a total lunar eclipse when the position of Earth passes between the sun and moon and casts a shadow upon the moon – this happens due to the Earth’s atmosphere scattering sunlight, filtering out the short wavelengths (blue), and allowing the longer wavelengths (red) to fall on the surface of the moon and illuminate it with a coppery red glow.
When a Blood Moon occurs, many people wish to engage in ways to celebrate the mesmerising phenomenon, whether it is to connect with the moon’s energy during the celestial event, to use its transformative elements to positively impact your life, or to focus on new intentions – and if you would get involved this time around, below are a few ways to bask in our satellite and all its glowing glory!
How to Celebrate the Blood Worm Moon
Moon Bathing
It is believed that the “energy of transformation” runs high under the influence of a Blood Moon and bathing during its appearance is a great way to release negative energy and harness the power for personal growth. Water is also believed to be a powerful element for emotional and negative energy cleansing, making a Blood Moon bath a great way to connect and harness the energy of the moon at this time of year.
- Make sure your space is quiet and tidy and carefully light a few candles, placing them around the room and/or your bathtub
- If desired, you can write down an intention before bathing.
- Run a warm bath and add to it bath salts or bath oils, such as lavender or camomile
- Enter the water and close your eyes, allowing the warm water to cover your skin and try to meditate for a few minutes.
- Depending on your bathing intention, think about the intention you wrote out before getting into the bath, or nd visualise the moon energy washing over you, washing away any negative energy you may be holding onto.
Create Moon Water
Another ritual you can perform is creating moon water. To do this, all you need is a bowl, a jug, a cup or a jar;
- Fill your item with spring or tap water
- Place your water-filled container outside under the Blood Moon or on your window cill and allow the water to bask in the energy of the moon.
- If desired, you can write down an intention and set it under your container
- As your container charges under the moon, you can meditate or engage in some light stretches and movements, such as heart chakra opening yoga poses.
- Once your water has charged, which can take up to 24 hours, you can add it to your Moon Bathing ritual, or you can drink the water as you visualise the intention you wrote earlier.
Meditation
The Blood Moon event is a perfect time for meditation as the energy is said to be quite intense, making it a great time to practise grounding and connect with your higher self.
- Find a quiet, uncluttered space where you can sit, or lie comfortably, whether it be on a stool, chair, yoga mat or cushion – this can also be outside!
- Light a candle, or two, along with some incense, and settle in your chosen position
- Close your eyes and visualise the light of the blood moon as it bathes your skin
- Make sure to take deep, controlled breaths as you allow the energy to flow through you
- Take this time to visualise your desires or intentions, whilst feeling the power of the universe behind you.
Whether you would like to take part in a ritual or simply gaze upon the moon over the next few days, you can witness the spectacle, according to the Sky at Night Magazine:
“From the UK, the Worm Moon will rise in the east and will be visible from about 18:40 UTC on 14 March 2025. It will be located in the constellation Virgo and will be just below the famous Bowl of Virgo.”
The last Blood Worm Moon was on 3 March 2007, and the next after 2025 is expected around 2043.
Happy Blood Worm Moon Day!
