Autumn is here, and there is excitement in the air – as much excitement as there is in our blood. It’s a magical season, one that reminds us of childhood, trick-or-treat parties, and haunted festivals.

But it also brings back something more important: that electric thrill when we first sat down in the dark to watch a horror movie, against the wishes of our parents or babysitter, with nothing but the glow of the television to keep us company.

Watching our first horror movie was an experience like no other. It was freedom, fun, rebellion, discovery, and a dare – a dare to keep watching and not be afraid because “it’s only a movie”. A phrase that means very little to a child once the film ends and everything goes dark.

Not just dark, but black, surrounding us and filling every corner of our imagination. Suddenly, everything we just watched seems to be lurking in every shadow, in every noise, which now seems five times louder as we make our way back to our room.

Every part of us wants to shout, “I did it! I watched my first horror movie, and my soul will never forget that beautiful experience!” But we remain silent, too afraid to make a sound, knowing that if we do, the thing from the movie might come and get us.

The adventure of that experience carries us to bed. We’ve made it. We’re safe, but we can’t wait to do it all over again the next night because there are more horror movies – so many more. What makes it even better is the memory of what we were eating and drinking while watching that first film. It’s something we never forget. And the best part is, we can have something new each time, because each horror movie, each moment of fright, is its own unique and wonderful treasure.

One of the greatest treasures horror ever produced was Vincent Price. The very mention of his name brings to life all the wonderful themes and symbols of classic horror, as well as horror itself.

I thought it would be wonderful to create a horror drink that people could enjoy during the season – something for any horror or Halloween occasion. And I wanted to do it in a way that would honour my favourite horror icon, Vincent Price. I shared this idea with a friend, Liz, who transformed my love for Vincent Price into a delicious and bloody mocktail for the Halloween season, perfect for toasting to horror any time you like.

She came up with a drink called “A Vincent Price”. It’s a mocktail, so anyone can enjoy it and celebrate the spooky season with Vincent Price. Here’s how to make it:

A Vincent Price Mocktail Ingredients

  • Blackberry Muddle
  • Ginger Beer
  • Sprite
  • A dash of Ginger Ale

Mix these ingredients gently, and it should come out looking as if it’s bleeding from the inside. While this drink is a mocktail, be aware that some ginger beers contain a small amount of alcohol. Always check the label and information before using, as it should not be given to children, and some people may be allergic. A Vincent Price can also be easily turned into an alcoholic drink, if desired, by keeping the ginger beer, or remain non-alcoholic by simply leaving it out.

A Vincent Price is a great way to toast any spooky seasonal occasion or bring festivity to a macabre affair. We are currently in the midst of a renaissance, a new gothic romantic period, and a movement like this needs a great horror drink to accompany it.

What better way to commemorate the spirit of this new era than with A Vincent Price? So, pour yourself this wonderful classic horror drink, raise your glass, celebrate horror, terror, and romanticism, and enjoy every horror-filled scream.
