I Love Lucy is a Ghosts BBC-episode filled with intrigue, romance, and ghostly mischief brings unexpected twists at Button House, writes GEMMA JOHNSON
This episode starts off somewhat unusually: Fanny is in an exceptionally good mood, positively glowing. Mike and Alison find themselves back in their solicitor’s office, getting the rights to their driveway and The Gatehouse from the vile Barclay. But all may not be as smooth as it seems.
The newly arrived Lucy, who is older than Alison, would have the rights to the Button Hall Estate if she were Alison’s sister. Alison enlists the help of the ghosts, with the Captain particularly thrilled at the prospect of a covert mission, code word ‘Eiderdown’. Julian, on the other hand, is beyond bored and decides to cause mischief by editing Mike’s emails. Julian now has a new nickname: ‘Mr Funny Fingers’, and he is egged on by Robin.
I do not enjoy Lucy as a character, but I don’t think we are supposed to. The reactions of the ghosts, however, are classic. Kitty is jealous, Thomas is fawning over her, and Mary is convinced Lucy is a witch and that she has seen her head spin. I understand the relevance of the storyline, and it was a nice step in terms of solidifying the relationship between Alison and the ghosts.
Pat is determined to find out the source of Fanny’s good mood. Julian quickly spots the flush in her cheeks and decides it must be because of an affair. Robin’s mathematical deductions determine that it has to be someone at Button House, as ghosts can only ‘smooch’ with other ghosts. That has actually never occurred to me, until now, and I suddenly have all sorts of questions.
Who could it be? How? Why? All of the ghosts are perplexed, but none more so than Humphrey, and I am just going to leave that there. Cue waltzing in the gardens, flower petals floating in the breeze, and lots of romantic music. Speaking of matters of the heart, Alison has started to gently interrogate Lucy, concerned about the prospect of potentially losing Button House and the ghosts. Robin declares his disturbing way to prove who his dad is: “I kept my dad’s skin”, and once again I have even more questions.
Mike is now experiencing his own romantic challenges, thanks to the emails interfered with by Julian. His boss seems hell-bent on having ‘relations’ with Mike. Much amusement ensues at the sight of a squirming Mike, while Julian and Robin ‘help’ by creating a romantic environment.
Takeaway lessons from this episode: one, love comes in many shapes and forms; who are we to judge? Two, never be afraid to ask questions, even if they are difficult.
