Alison hits her limit in BBC’s Ghosts: The Hardest Word, sparking chaos, comedy and a heartfelt redemption, writes GEMMA JOHNSON
This episode was number nine in my Top 10 favourite episodes of Ghosts but there was some debate amongst my family. I stood my ground though.
Alison has reached her limit and there were likely some very sweary words used because Kitty was “Too upset to even cry”.
But what happened?
Alison has been under stress with the House, The Gate House and managing the demands of the ghosts. As they all reflect upon how the exchange has made them feel, Robin is the only one to suggest that they actually say sorry.
Mike, meanwhile, thinks it’s much better for Alison to have the day off, whilst she has grand plans this actually ends up looking like eating crisps in a bathrobe (I see nothing wrong with that at all!).
Julian’s finger kicks off an almighty row between the ghosts watched calmly by Mary from the corner of the room – could she be the key to getting Alison back on side?
Nope, Mary goes all Dragon’s Den and I loved it!
It spirals back into a row. Comical moments throughout this section lead by Captain ‘firing’ his gun to silence them all. But still, no firm solution as to how to make things right with Alison, although “avoiding her until she dies” had potential.
Did you know that Ging Gang Goolie is not just a song, it was also a disease? No, me either. But apparently the poet Byron once had it, according to Thomas.
Hands down one of my all time favourite moments takes place during these scenes: Humphrey teaching Robin how to say Apothecary. Robin cannot get it right. Humphrey’s solution: “Just say chemist!”
They decide to create a song – referred to by Mary as wailing as she sits smugly outside away from the others. The song that they create is iconic – in my humble opinion, of course – especially when Thomas verges into 90s boyband.
Did Alison accept the apology though? I certainly would and now I can’t get ‘sorry song’ out of my head.
Don’t worry, the ghosts redeem themselves in the most meaningful way possible to Alison. Aww! I wonder if my office ghosts would do the same for me?
Take away lessons from this episode: Movie titles are not always what they seem and once you have found your voice, always make sure you use it.
