Ghosts BBC’s About Last Night teaches us more about the plague people, shows Alison and Mike’s wild hangover, and ends with Alison vomiting on the wedding planner, writes GEMMA JOHNSON
Review of Ghosts: About Last Night
Oh, my beloved plague people! I was so thrilled to see them have an opening section within this episode and even more so that we got to see how they contracted the plague. Providing a good background story helps the audience connect with the characters even more, this subtle brief encounter did just that. Poor Mick, the thought was there….
The harmony of the first episode has been shattered – Alison and Mike partied a little too hard and are very, very, very hungover. But the repercussions of their boozy night go far beyond a headache and sickness, the ghosts are not amused and slightly confused, there is a wedding planner due and a naked man sleeping on an antique chaise long.
The morning after the night before can bring a whole range of emotions and it seems that there was a touching exchange between Mary and Robin leading to some awkward glances. Thomas is equally smitten with Alison who, in a very inebriated state, led Thomas to believe that in a past life she would have ‘hooked up’ with him. Kitty is distressed, feeling ignored and left out of Alison’s friendship circle but most shocking of all…. Dante, Fanny’s beloved stuffed dog is missing! (insert dramatic music here)
The drama between the plague people spills out from the basement and Julian takes it upon himself to take command of the situation. As I write this, the UK is about to have a general election and Julian demonstrates the same level of charisma, and people skills, that the leaders of the main parties did in the debate screened on the BBC last night (insert sarcasm here) Mick the plague person says what I think everyone in the UK is thinking right about now “You’re not very good at this are you?”
Dante is located but now Mike has disappeared, the panic is rising as the clock ticks closer and closer to the arrival of the wedding planner. The sight of Alison stuffing Dante’s bottom with tissues is enough to turn anyone’s stomach – hangover or not. But tragedy is avoided, and Fanny is placated with Dante’s new fireplace location – phew. Now just to figure out where Mike is.
My favourite moment takes place within the last 60 seconds of the episode – wedding planner arrives, Alison answers the door, suit of Armour falls out of the cupboard, causes a breeze which sends papers into the fire setting Dante alight, Mike breaks the drainpipe that he is trying to shimmy down after being trapped on the roof, swamp water spills out and Alison vomits on the wedding planner. Another perfect moment of comedic timing.
Takeaway lesson from this episode – the cost of a wedding is likely to be vomit inducing, try not to be sick on the wedding planner.
