Newquay is a town located on the north coast of Cornwall. The town is known for the sandy Fistral and Watergate Bay beaches, as well as its fascinating and somewhat compelling haunted stories. These are some of the best places to see a ghost in the town of Newquay, Cornwall.
Trerice Manor
Trerice Manor was built in 1572 by Sir John Arundell, who the majority of the locals referred to as the Wicked Lord. He was given this name because of his habits of gambling, drinking, womanizing, and living a wayward life with wayward friends.
It is believed that he seduced a young service girl, slept with her and she conceived a child. When he found out that she was pregnant, he had her killed, although some people say she died in child-birth.
The ghost of this young girl is said to haunt the rooms of the Trerice Manor as its guests have reported seeing her and feeling her presence by the scent that she carries, which smells of lilac. They say whenever she is present, there is a very noticeable drop in the temperature of the room and this feeling of her presence is strongest in the library, where she is believed to have “died”.
Trerice Manor is not home to just one ghost, as people have also reported seeing a headless horse rider who rides across the manor’s courtyard in the middle of the night with his head firmly tucked under his arm.
Queens Head Hotel, Newquay
The Queen’s Head Hotel has stood in the city of Newquay since the 17th century and it is the oldest alehouse in the whole town.
The hotel is said to be haunted by a young maiden named Betsy. According to the stories that have been reported, Betsy was impregnated by the Landlord of the alehouse. After finding out, she went and hung herself and the hotel has been haunted by her ghost ever since.
Headland Hotel
The Headland Hotel is one of the most magnificently constructed buildings in England. With its grandiose structure, it overlooks the Fistral beach and the building has a gothic outlook, which adds to the overall effect of the haunted nature of the hotel.
The hotel was built in 1900 and it was used to house royalty and servicemen during World War II. It was even used as a hospital for military personnel so it witnessed its fair share of soldier deaths.
It is said that you can still hear the voices of the screaming soldiers as they writhe in pain. Apart from the undead soldiers, people have sighted nurses from a past time with some even being awoken by these nurses right in their rooms.
The building is so naturally scary that it was used as the location for the 1990’s hit horror movie, “The Witches”.
Smugglers Den Inn, Cubert
The Smugglers Den Inn sits in the little hamlet of Trebellan near Cubert and it has quite a fascinating story relating to smugglers from several years ago.
The Inn is said to be haunted by some of these smugglers, most popularly, Black Face Kelly.
A smuggler who most others did not like as he dished out death to anyone he felt like dishing it out to. He vanished, some say with tubs of gold, but now he walks around the den scaring people right out of their boots.
