Dracula and wise cracks? Here are some flicks that show us the lighter side of the Prince of Darkness
1. Son of Dracula (1974)
OK, it’s questionable how funny this film starring Harry Nillson as Drac Jr actually is. But Ringo Starr beard’s a riot and there’s some groovy songs! Read Son of Dracula 1974 Review.
2. Vampira aka Old Dracula (1974)
How David Niven retains his dignity in this film is anyone’s guess, but it’s a credit to him. More than a few chuckles to be had. Read Vampira aka Old Dracula 1974 Review.
3. Dracula père et fils aka Dracula Father and Son (1976)
Christopher Lee claimed he isn’t playing Dracula in this film. That comment is probably funnier than the film!
4. Love at First Bite (1979)
George Hamilton puts a stake through the heart of any idea that Dracula is beyond ridicule. One of the funniest horrors ever. Read Love at First Bite 1979 Review.
5. Dracula: Dead and Loving It (1995)
This Mel Brooks comedy has a better script than most “serious” adaptations of the Bram Stoker novel. And while its no Young Frankenstein – the film is amusing from start to finish. (BTW Leslie Neilsen could have played a fantastic “serious” Dracula – he has the accent down pat and looks perfect!) Read Dracula: Dead and Loving It 1995 Review.
